The Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics in Frankfurt/Main, Germany, investigates the attentional, cognitive, and affective mechanisms of aesthetic perception and evaluation.

The Institute invites applications for a

Student Assistant (studentische Hilfskraft)

for 20 hours a week

to work under the supervision of Dr. Edward Vessel. We use behavioral and neuroimaging techniques (fMRI, EEG, fNIRS) to investigate aesthetic responses to (primarily visual) aesthetic experiences, such as when a person finds an artwork to be beautiful. The position is an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in conducting neuroscientific research projects in a stimulating interdisciplinary environment. Although the assistant may help with several projects, the primary work will be to assist with data collection and analysis of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), physiological, and behavioral data as participants view a dynamic light-based artwork.

Your responsibilities:

  • become familiar with the hardware and software setup for this unique experiment (including Lab Streaming Layer; LSL);
  • manage data collection of multiple signals (behavior, physiology, fNIRS);
  • analyze time-varying signals using MNE-Python and similar analysis tools;
  • recruit participants (set up recruitment using the Institute database, create materials, etc.);
  • organize and review relevant literature, write summaries.

Our offer:

  • a highly interactive working atmosphere in an international, interdisciplinary research institute;
  • a modern and well-equipped workplace in an attractive neighborhood with excellent infrastructure in Frankfurt’s Westend district.

The contract is initially limited to one semester (6 months), with the possibility of extension. The start date will be March 1, 2022. Remote working during COVID-19 is possible.

The Max Planck Society strives for gender equality and diversity. We are also committed to increasing the number of individuals with disabilities in our workforce. Therefore, applicants of all backgrounds are welcome.

Please send your application including your cover letter, CV, certificate of study, and references (if possible, submit materials in English) in a single PDF file, before February 1, 2022, by e-mail to using the code “SH03_2022” in the subject line.

  • experience with programming—e.g., Python, Matlab, R, or other languages;
  • interest in neuroscience and neuroaesthetics and motivated to learn;
  • English fluency (primary language of research group) and good command of German;
  • status as MSc student (preferably Neuroscience, Psychology, Engineering, Computer Science or related); exceptionally well-qualified Bachelor students may also be considered;
  • good organization and communication skills, ability to work well as part of a team;
  • proficiency with office programs (Word, Excel, etc.);
  • familiarity with fNIRS, physiology, EEG, or fMRI data collection helpful, but not required.
